Staff of Lira Regional Referral Hospital (LRRH) on Saturday, 25th July 2026, joined communities around the hospital and actively participated in the first-ever National Cleaning Day.
The staff were led by Senior Executive Consultant (SEC) Dr. Andrew Odur and Acting Principal Hospital Administrator Ms. Monica Akello Oyet.
At 7:00 a.m., the teams, equipped with cleaning equipment including brooms, scrubbers, and mops, swept and cleaned the Outpatient Department, inpatient wards, the Accident and Emergency Unit, the mortuary, walkways within the hospital, and the perimeter surrounding the hospital, including neighboring areas around Lira Regional Referral Hospital.
Speaking at the close of the first National Cleaning Day, Senior Executive Consultant Dr. Andrew Odur applauded the staff for their commitment and national leaders for coming up with the initiative that will enhance community hygiene.
“We are delighted to join the rest of the nation in implementing the National Cleaning Day. As a hospital, we have taken this up, and we were able to mobilize all the staff and patients within the hospital to be part of this event. We started with a very big number of people who left the comfort of their homes and came here to serve,” said Dr. Odur.
He added that, during subsequent National Cleaning Days, the hospital team will not only mobilize more people to participate in the exercise but will also use the day to educate the masses on health matters.
“Going forward, we are looking at mobilizing more people, not only those within the hospital but also members of the community and our neighbors around the hospital, so that they come and lend a hand as we clean the hospital. The team is excited. The environment looks neater and cleaner than before, and we want to keep this going for many months and many years to come.”
The National Cleaning Day is a Government of Uganda initiative and will be observed on the last Saturday of every month from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
