The construction of the Regional Blood Bank at Lira Regional Referral Hospital (LRRH) is now at 98% according to the contractor, Uganda Peoples Defense Forces engineering brigade.
Minister of Health Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero presided over the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the 9.8 Billion shillings blood bank in March 2025.
The facility which sits on 5 acres of land out of the 20, donated by Lira University to Lira Regional Referral Hospital once completed is expected to process 48,000 Units of blood annually.
The project manager also Senior Engineer from Ministry of Health Eng. Alex Tumwesigye, applauded the contractor for the work well done.
He confirmed that government will provide shillings 2 Billion for the remaining works, urging the contractor not to abandon the site.

“Government has already provided money to ensure that the project is completed and handed over to UBTS for use, So we hope nothing goes wrong, that by end of this year we should be coming here to hand over this project, because the biggest work has been done. What remains now is to do the finishing and install the equipment and have the project handed over”. said Eng Tumwesigye

Lira Regional Referral Hospital Acting Director Dr.Andrew Odur underscored the need for the contractor to maintain quality and finish the works in time.
“The need for blood continues to grow and once this structure is completed, we are optimistic that it should be able to meet the demands of the clinical team,” says Dr Odur.
Fahad Kisosonkole, from the UPDF engineering brigade, pledged that they will ensure the construction is completed and handed over in time.
